Frida Kahlo and Fulang-Chang 2021

Frida Kahlo and Fulang-Chang (2021)

Soft Pastel on Canvas

About Frida Kahlo and Fulang-Chang (From the Artist)

This painting depicts Frida Kahlo and Fulang-Chang her pet spider monkey.

Frida is dressed in a man’s tailored suit as she appeared in a family photo (see below).

Though the photo is in black and white, I interpreted Frida’s love for bright colors and expressed them vividly in this painting.

Here Frida appears vibrant, virile and healthy quite in contrast to how she portrayed herself in paintings.

Fulang-Chang was a constant companion, gifted to her by her husband Diego Rivera, likely as a compassionate

gesture since he and Frida could not conceive.

About the Artist

Cheryl Vargas was born in Gary, Indiana, and grew up in both Chicago’s Cabrini Green Housing Projects and

in a little brown house in Valparaiso Indiana. She married and returned to Chicago’s Wrigleyville where she raised three sons and ultimately moved to Oak Park, IL.

A self-taught artist with a BFA in graphic arts from Concordia University in River Forest, IL, she is the Creative in Chief at Studio 928, which is the culmination of many years of melding together art, technology, and teaching into a business she and her clients love.

Frida and Fulang-Chang was painted outdoors, on the deck in the sun. “I had a blast painting it in soft pastel chalk”.

A painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and event planner she loves portraiture—primarily acrylics, but also pastels, graphite and watercolor.

Her sculpted art brings out the beauty in the very things which pollute and clutter our environment, primarily plastics and containers.

Her work life includes promoting Studio 928, teaching, and dispelling the “starving artists” myth. Cheryl enjoys spending time with her sons and her grandchildren, traveling, and visiting with friends.

Studio 928

From March of 2020 to the present, Studio 928 is a virtual art studio. Cheryl and her team host live online events for some of the top corporations in the United States.

She hopes to go back to a brick-and-mortar studio when it ultimately makes sense to do so.
